The older C7's were never a tonal preference. An issue that Steinway lags way behind on. In addition to the prepping that's done at the factory before it hits the dealer. Yamaha just has their mass production pianos and handmade models down with regard to smoothness and next to no friction in the action. My engineer friend compares it to using a classic, original Neve on vocals.Īnd when set up and regulated right by a knowledgeable Steinway tech, I like the Steinway action, in a lot of cases better then even Renner on certain European pianos I've played.īut it goes without saying that you'll find way more consistency with the CF6 then a Steinway B. I need that girth yet coupled with a warm, dark tone. I'm still partial to the NY Steinway tone. But yes the CF6 is right there with a NY B (even with pricing). Never have played the C6X, from what I recall. Sometimes even room acoustics affect an impression as well. The age or how well it had been taken care of. Not sure what would make the action different, and maybe it was just a coincidence.Ĭould have been the condition of the particular piano. Especially after remembering what I paid for a new C7E in 1985.Īnd a couple of C6's I got a chance to play actually seemed to feel better than the C7's I've played. In any case my head explodes every time I see the list on a new C7X. In which case the more thundering bass would probably take preference. However I could see in a rock or pop context that element getting easily lost with louder volumes - in a recording studio or live in club or on a concert stage. I've played the CF6 & C7X side by side and am partial to the more refined tone, closer to the CFX, of the CF6. Only surpassed by the handmade CF6 - although you might find people that prefer the bigger bass the 7'6'' piano has over the 7'er - and flagship CFX concert grand. Really an incredible, versatile piano in every way. Pretty much re-affirmed by the reviewer here. Just from a player's perspective, I notice a more intimate, complex, warmer and overall singing tone. The C7X has been out for some time now (2012) and I'm always asked if I know the differences. I came across this older review from 2014 and the thoughts of someone playing the two most popular pianos in the world side by side at Yamaha's Artists Services in NYC.
